Darkness Versus Light
1 John 1:5-10
Verse 6 If we claim to have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.
Yesterday we talked about how we are to reflect Christ to the world around us by living like Him. But what about those moments when we that we aren’t walking in the light?
In our passage today John points out that it is easy to say that we are His but it is something totally different to actually live in the light of Christ’s teaching. Church buildings have a lot of people who visit on Sunday mornings but who never desire a personal relationship with God. Oh, they say they want one or maybe even claim that they have one but when it comes to forsaking the darkness of the world they just can’t bring themselves to do it.
This leaving the darkness has to come from an intentional choice of wanting His will instead of our own. Only then will we actually take the steps of surrender that are needed to get to the point of caring more about light than we do about darkness. See, the truth of the problem isn’t that we struggle with sin as much as it is that we struggle with Christ.
It isn’t that we shouldn’t struggle against our sin. In fact it would be best to hate it but we don’t and that is why we struggle with Christ. We have been created to be living in the light of Him and His teaching but we have a sinful nature that we have inherited from Adam. Because of that sinful nature we don’t struggle against the darkness of sin and instead struggle against Christ and full surrender to Him.
This full surrender is not something we like think too much about and yet it is one of the most important things that we need to know. If we truly want to live in the light of Christ we need to learn that darkness cannot be given a resting place in our hearts. To do so shows that we love our sin more than we love God. Darkness and light cannot coexist. Nor should we want them to. If we truly love God then we will hate sin, even when it is ours
Making It Personal
Do you find surrendering to Christ something that is too hard for you? What reason do you have for not surrendering? Is that a good reason to not embrace the light of Christ?
Making It Personal Kids
Why can’t the darkness stay around when the light comes into the room? What does the darkness represent? What does the light represent?
Father, thank You for giving us a light. Convict us of the places in our heart where we tend to cave into our sin instead of following in the light of Jesus. In Jesus’ name, amen.
