Created to Praise
Verse 5 Let them praise the name of the Lord, for at his command they were created,
Yesterday we talked about how the disciples praised Jesus because of their relationship with Him. Have you ever thought about creation praising Him?
This psalm starts out by talking about various portions of creation praising the Creator. Can things really praise Him? Do birds sing as a way of praising the Lord? How can the ocean praise Him? Stars, the moon, sun and even the angels and heavenly beings are told by the psalmist to praise the Lord because He created them.
Jesus told the Pharisees that if the people were quiet about who He was the stones would cry out (Luke 19:40). Jesus knew that even the creation is able to praise Him. He wanted the praise of the people but if they wouldn’t, it didn’t diminish who He is nor did it mean He didn’t deserve praise. All it does when people refuse to praise Him is that the rest of creation must take on the role of worshipers. It diminishes the role of the human.
This, of course, doesn’t mean that we, as humans, can ignore our need to praise Him. He didn’t tell the people to be quiet so that the rocks could do the cheering. His plan was not that the rest of creation do what He designed humans to do. He created us in His image so that He could have a relationship with us.
This relationship isn’t equal. We are in no way equal with the God of creation, meaning we are not the ones worthy of praise. The created is never greater than the creator and we, as humans, need to remember that. This is especially true of us Christians. We are His ambassadors to this world and as such we should be examples as to how best praise our God.
Praising God is one of the ways we can help others know who God is. When we are praising Him we are pointing to Him. And when we are pointing to Him we are doing what we were created to do.
Making It Personal
How worthy do you think God is of praise? Does the amount of praise you give to Him reflect how worthy you say He is? What do you need to praise Him for right now?
Making It Personal Kids
How does creation praise God? What is a way that Jesus wants us to praise Him? What are you going to praise Jesus for today?
Father, we long to praise You as You desire. Help us never make it so creation has to praise because we aren’t praising as we should. In Jesus’ name, amen.
