Christ Goes Up, Up and Away!

Acts 1:9

Verse 9 After He said this, He was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid Him from their sight.

The deepest of friendships are those that have been through the highest highs and lowest lows. This was the relationship that Jesus had with His disciples. They had just been asking Him about His coming kingdom and still seemed to misunderstand about Him not setting up a kingdom for Himself.

They were waiting for Him to make His move. He had just tried telling them where they will fit into His new kingdom. They were likely waiting to walk back into town or have Him disappear again just has He had so many times since His resurrection. But they were in for an unexpected turn of events. Instead of disappearing as He had done before, He starts floating up into the air.

This was something that would have brought so many conflicting thoughts. First there would have been blinking of their eyes as they tried figuring out if they were really seeing Him floating upward. Then there was the questioning thoughts of wondering why He was doing that and then as He continues upward their thoughts may have changed to wondering if this was the end. And as if mesmerized they keep watching Him go up, up and away.

They knew this was different than any other time He had left them. What did this all mean? Where was He going? When would He be back? Would He be back? They continue watching even after He is covered by a cloud. They can’t believe their eyes.

They were going to miss their friend and the companionship they had with Him. The Holy Spirit would comfort and guide them in a little over a week but until then it was all about knowing Him as they had known Him. Knowing Him is the only thing that would carry them forward with their mission. Knowing Him is what is needed for us to carry out our work for Him too.

Making It Personal

Have you had times when you just focused on Jesus? How has focusing on Him and what you have learned from Him changed your life? In what area of your life do you need to focus on Him?

Making It Personal Kids

Have you ever watched someone you love leave and watched them until you couldn’t see them any longer? How does it feel to watch someone you love leave? How does it make you feel knowing that Jesus will never leave you?

Closing Prayer

Father, we thank You that we can know You in a personal way and know because of Your Spirit in us, that You will never leave us. Lead us and guide us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
