Verse 15a But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve
Choices. They are something we all have to make multiple times an hour. Some of us are more adept to making choices quickly while others of us are hesitant due to fear of making the wrong choice. But there are some choices that we need to be ready to make at a moment’s notice. This week we will be looking back at the Old Testament to show the example that the New Testament Christians had to follow in building the Church for God.
After Jesus died, raised from the dead and ascended, His followers had a choice to make – were they going to go back to life as they had known it or surrender to the work of the furthering the Kingdom of God. In our passage today we see the Israelites facing a similar situation. The people of Israel were facing the death of the leader that had brought them into the Promised Land. To make sure they were ready for taking ownership of the land God gives Joshua one more message to solidify who they worship.
God had kept His people in the wilderness for forty years. There had been false gods in Egypt and God tried for forty years to prove Himself to His people. He had given them the land that had been promised to their ancestors and helped them defeat city after city. But they were once again among other people who worshiped more false gods. One of the issues with false gods is that they walk into our lives boldly and stealthily. They don’t sneak in without notice, we actually see them but don’t feel like we are weak enough to fall for them.
We need to be aware of the idols around us so that we see the truth about them. We are just as easily swayed to false gods as those people all those years ago, maybe even more so due to the internet and television. They will come and we need to be ready to make the choice against them. The easiest way to fight against the pull of false gods is to choose God alone as the one that we worship. Not that choosing God is choosing the easy life, but it is the best choice.
Making It Personal
What choice have you made that moved you closer to God and farther from false gods? What is a false god that you struggle with in life? What do you need to do to walk away from it?
Making It Personal Kids
Do you have a hard time making a decision? What makes it hard to choose? When you have to choose between Jesus and something else, which do you choose?
Father, thank You for the reminder that it is easy to fall into a situation where we have to choose between You and a false god. Help us grow ever closer to You so that our choice doesn’t waver. In Jesus’ name, amen.
