Building Fund

2 Samuel 8:7-12

Verse 8 From Tebah and Berothai, towns that belonged to Hadadezer, King David took a great quantity of bronze.

With all these battles happening there is no doubt that there was some pillaging. They wouldn’t kill all those people and leave their valuables behind. God was providing for the future while they were carrying out His will to rid the land of evil, idol worshiping people. One of the amazing things about our God is that He is working out the good of His people in many ways all at the same time, interweaving needs and opportunities for a few and for many simultaneously.

When the children of Israel were leaving Egypt God prompted the Egyptians to look favorably at the people of God and they gave the Israelites anything they asked for (Exodus 12:36). That was probably the most peaceful pillage that has ever happened in the history of mankind. What we learn as we follow the Israelites through the wilderness wanderings is, God had a purpose for each and every item that was taken with them.

People who were slaves and were now wandering through the desert without food or water to speak of would not have had the jewels, precious metals and linens that were needed to build and fill the Tabernacle of the Lord. But God knew what He was going to be asking of the people and He made sure they had everything they needed to make the place that would represent His dwelling place.

Now that David had brought up the idea to build God a more permanent dwelling, the Lord is showing He knew David’s heart, even though He had told the king He hadn’t asked to live in a building. God is providing the material which will be used by Solomon who isn’t even born yet.

God is a provider for the things which please Him in our lives. He doesn’t lead us in a direction and then leave us to fend for ourselves. When we are devoted to Him and His ways we will find Him supplying all that is needed to fulfill His desires. He owns the cattle on a thousand hills (Psalm 50:10) so He has all that we need and more. He is willing to provide if we are in His will and following His leading.

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for always providing for us. Help us trust You to make a way for anything that You ask of us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
