Baby, You Make Me Wanna Jump!

Luke 1:39-45

Verse 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

Now that Mary is expecting she heads off to visit with her relative, Elizabeth. This wasn’t a short journey. In fact it was quite similar to the trip Mary would take with Joseph in 9 short months. This trip was likely taken for multiple reasons, one of which is that Mary needed a wise woman who would understand that God works things out in ways that we don’t expect. There would be a special bond between the two, even if there hadn’t been one before. It would also help Elizabeth, who was likely needing some interaction while in seclusion, a seclusion she was not used to.

Our conundrum for the day is what happened as soon as Mary arrived. Mary was no doubt tired of traveling and ready to see a familiar face and just as is often the case when visiting loving relatives, a greeting is followed with excitement. The thing that was different with this greeting is that the unborn baby of the older lady reacted to the presence of the unborn baby of the younger lady.

Babies can hear in the womb but there is no way for them to see outside their space. And the thought that they could hear another unborn baby is just not believable at all. But these weren’t just any ordinary babies! And if you remember back to verse 15, Gabriel had told Zechariah that the baby John would be filled with the Holy Spirit before he was even born. This was the only unborn child that we are told acknowledged the Messiah before birth. It was such a special moment that even Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

Elizabeth’s greeting to Mary was also one of recognition of what was going on in Mary’s life. This trip happened soon after Mary’s visit from Gabriel and so it is likely that she wasn’t very far along in her pregnancy. And as we talked about yesterday, news of Elizabeth’s pregnancy hadn’t reached Nazareth in 6 months so it is highly unlikely that news of Mary’s child would have reached Elizabeth’s seclusion. The fact that Elizabeth declares that Mary is pregnant with the Messiah is the Holy Spirit’s revelation. This reunion was a significant one and a blessing for both ladies. This incidence also reveals that the whole of the Trinity was involved in the Messiah coming to earth.
