Answers for the Taunts

Psalm 119:41-48
Verses 41-42 May Your unfailing love come to me, Lord, Your salvation, according to Your promise; then I can answer anyone who taunts me, for I trust in Your word.
We have reached the sixth stanza of this psalm about the Word and learning its value in our lives. He has stated how it is that we can be covered in righteousness through Christ’s sacrifice and today he leads us forward into what that means.
We talk often of God’s unfailing love but how often do we stop and think about what that means? It means that He loves us when we feel unlovable. He loves us even though we are sinners. He loves us even when we fail Him. He loves us. No ifs, ands or buts. He is love and therefore He can’t fail at it. He loves so much that He sent His one and only Son to be our salvation.
Though the psalmist didn’t know the facts of how God was going to send salvation, he had no doubt that God would make a way for His people to be redeemed. He knew that God would keep His promise. God’s unfailing love wouldn’t let Him go back on His word. There was a plan from before the fall in the Garden of Eden.
The psalmist is asking for God to bring His unfailing love to him so that he will have an answer for those who taunt him. He is holding onto God’s unfailing love as he feels attacked by others. While in the trenches of life this man of song was finding comfort in God’s unfailing love because he was experiencing the pain of rejection and ridicule from those around him.
This is something that we should be able to relate with but how do we respond to the attacks of these people? The psalmist is asking for the unfailing love of God be shown to him so that he can have answers to give those who taunt him. While we would rather that the people would just leave us alone and stop taunting us, the psalmist wants to engage them with the truth. He wants answers so that he can reveal God to them and show them His salvation. This should be our desire too. We should be asking God for wisdom, through His unfailing love, to speak truth to those who mock us for our faith. We should be looking for ways to reveal God’s unfailing love to them so that they can also know truth.
