A Secret Prophet No Longer
Updated: Mar 26, 2020
Verse 15 Yet the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear Him and to be healed of their sicknesses.
We again visit the story of the man with leprosy that we read about yesterday. Jesus had told him that He was willing to heal him and today we read about His instructions after the healing. Now remember that this man had likely been dis-figured before Jesus healed him. All of a sudden he doesn't have the pain and his skin has cleared and he is able to move in ways he hasn't been able to. What is the first thing you would want to do? Tell the world, right? But that is exactly what Jesus told Him not to do.
What Jesus told him to do instead was go to the priest and offer the required sacrifices as a testimony to what had happened to him. Mistakenly so, many people believed that illness was a direct result of sin. The man going to the priest to offer the sacrifice allowed the priest to agree that the disease was gone thereby allowing the man to be restored to fellowship with the other Jews including his family.
As you can imagine, keeping the news of this man's healing under wraps was impossible and news quickly spread. And as news spread the crowds around Jesus grew.
Let's pause a moment on our journey and observe these crowds.
These crowds were coming not as fellow followers of Jesus but to listen to Him and hope for healing. They weren't coming to Jesus for Him but for what they could get from Him. Did Jesus stop teaching or healing because they were not there for the right reason? No, He knew that among the members of the crowd there were still those who would be honest followers, including His disciples.
Making it personal
How do you come to Jesus? Do you come to learn at His feet and follow Him to the cross or do you see Him only as someone that can give you something? What is a step you can take towards seeing Him as the Leader of your life's journey? Will you commit to that step towards Him today?
Making it personal kids
What do you think it was like for Jesus to have so many people coming to see Him? What are some things you think Jesus healed people of?
Father God, help us know what it means to follow You in this journey. Please keep us from just wanting to be near You so You can heal us. In Jesus' name, amen.
