A Hunger for Information

Psalm 119:153-160

Verses 155-156 Salvation is far from the wicked, for they do not seek out Your decrees. Your compassion, Lord, is great; preserve my life according to Your laws.

We have seen how the promises of the Lord and the law bring delight to the psalmist. He continues praising the Lord for the way the law shows the love of the Lord.

The psalmist is seeing even more clearly the connection between the law and salvation. He doesn’t connect it to say that we can work our way to heaven and salvation through obedience to the law. We can’t work our way to heaven but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t continue to seek the law and the deep truths of Scripture.

This need to dig deep into Scripture is something that we would do well to be more intentional about. It is so easy to be sidetracked and ignore our need to feed on the Word. It isn’t that our hunger for information is low, but it is more often than not sought from places other than the words of the Lord. We listen to or read the posts of our favorite news source, take in the information and think about what it could mean for us. We believe it because we trust the source.

The Word of God is never changing. It has stood the test of time, always proving to be true. The fact that we don’t seek it out for deeper reading says a lot about our heart towards God. If we don’t spend time investigating the truths found in the Word of God we will miss the truths that He has set forth for us. And we should be able to tell by the amount of time we spend in studying it, just how important He is to us.

It is good to read the Word but it is important that we want to know the truth that the Scriptures hold. One reason is so we can learn the truth of Scripture but it is also a means of getting to know ourselves as well. There is much talk in society about finding ourselves, but we will only know the truth of ourselves through the careful examining of Scripture. When we seek His Word we will be learning truth and truth will help us grow. This is the law preserving our lives.
