A Horrible Night
Updated: Mar 16
Verse 6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
Today we begin our walk through Jesus’ final hours as we learn how He spoke from the cross.
We begin the story as Jesus is being led to the place of the crucifixion. To fully understand the situation that Jesus is living through let’s take a few minutes to remember what He has lived through already in the past 24 hours. He came into Jerusalem and celebrated His last Passover meal with His closest friends. It was His last meal. When a prisoner is offered a last meal, they usually choose an old favorite but Jesus chose a meal that would serve to remind Him of all that was coming for Him and what each portion represented in His life.
The Passover was not just any meal. It was carried out with much ceremony. Each portion was taken and talked about so that each generation would remember what God had done for His people in the exodus from Egypt. But Jesus also knew that those different portions pointed to the sacrifice He would soon be making.
This meal also included the revelation to 11 of the friends that number 12 wasn’t really one of the team. He watched Judas walk out of the room and knew that he was on his way to finish the deed that had been brewing in his heart.
After the meal there was the walk to pray. He asked His closest friends to walk farther with Him and pray; they took naps instead. He prayed so hard He was sweating what appeared to be blood. His heart was so heavy under the weight of the upcoming events. He was then betrayed and arrested. He was tried in the most crooked religious court of all time as they broke all their own rules to charge an innocent man. He has heard one of His closest friends deny knowing Him three times after having been deserted by most of the rest of His friends. He has also been flogged, beat, and had a crown of woven thorns pushed into His skull. He has been found innocent and sentenced to one of the most horrific forms of death known to man.
These are the things that He has been going through just prior to where we pick of the story. He has been up all night and it has been a night of emotional and physical torment. But, the worst is yet to be.
Making It Personal
Have you ever thought about what Jesus went through that night? How would that make you feel? Does knowing this make sin look the different to you?
Making It Personal Kids
What kind of day and night had Jesus had? Does it make you feel sad for Jesus? Do you know that Jesus went through all of this because of sin?
Father, Jesus went through so much because of our sins. Help us think of this when we are tempted to sin. Thank You for loving us so much to go through everything You did. In Jesus’ name, amen.
