A Forever Hope

Psalm 130

Verse 7 Israel, put your hope in the Lord, for with the Lord is unfailing love and with Him is full redemption.

Now that we have been reminded that we need to be waiting eagerly while serving the psalmist reminds the singers that they need to put their hope in the Lord.

Hope. This is something that is vitally important to us as humans. Without hope a person loses their will to live. We tend to put our hope in things and situations that sound good to us. We hope to have a good paying job, so that we can hope to get a nice house, so that we can have a nice family to fill it and the list goes on and on. These, and others like them, give us the push we need to move forward in life.

Hope is the thing that helps us struggle on through the hard times. It can make even the hardest times seem bearable if we still see the light at the end of the tunnel. But there is one thing that hope requires, one has to hold on to it to have it. Hope isn’t something that holds on to us or something that once we choose it we always have it. It is choosing moment by moment to hold onto it that allows us to have it.

The hope we should have in our spiritual life is the same. Unless we make the choice to hold onto hope it will be elusive to us. The psalmist had the only solution for that. He knew that when we put our hope in the things of earth they will eventually fail us. The job will end up being only for a time and the house will age and start needing repairs. The people we fill our lives with will die or move away. The only hope that has everlasting strength is hope in God.

Only the Lord is unfailing. We sing about how great His faithfulness is but do we think about how that is our only true source of hope? When we say we put our hope in the Lord do we really think about what that means? To put our hope in God is to know that He will do what He says. This hope knows that His love is unfailing and that He alone is our source of redemption. And for this we praise Him!

Father, thank You for being our hope. We know that You are always faithful and that we can trust You with every thing in life and in death. Help us to always keep our eyes on You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
