A Forced Exit

Exodus 12:33-36

Verse 33 The Egyptians urged the people to hurry and leave the country. “For otherwise,” they said, “we will all die!”

Yesterday we started talking about how God plans ahead. Today we start our journey out of Egypt.

Remember that the Egyptians have just suffered an awful loss at the hands of God. That is what led them to beg the Israelites to leave. Once again God has it all planned out. He has told Moses to tell the people to ask many things from the Egyptian people. We see in our passage that the people were happy to oblige.

Now remember that the Israelites are headed away from known civilization. Only God could have seen the providence in taking some of these items with them. They were obviously not packing light for this trip. They were moving and while most of us try downsizing in a move the Israelites were upsizing. This was with purpose though, even if the people didn’t know it yet.

This sounds like the kindest rendering of a plundering in history. They asked and received. They took not just things that would prove valuable but also things that were practical. They didn’t see the way God was using this to fulfill future needs but God had it all planned out.

They would need to the gems and precious metals to build the tabernacle and cloth to not only provide more resources for the tabernacle but also the clothing they would need as theirs wore out over the 40 years they didn’t know that they would be spending in the wilderness. Yes, God had every detail planned out.

Not only did they peacefully plunder their soon to be former neighbors but God caused the Egyptians to look favorably on the Israelites. The Lord was blessing them through those who had held them in bondage. He was using His foresight to prepare His people in ways they didn’t know they needed. He still does that for His people today.

Making It Personal

How is God blessing you? Have you ever given thought about the fact that a blessing isn’t for frivolousness? Could He be giving you a blessing for future use or maybe even to bless someone else?

Making It Personal Kids

What are some ways that God gives blessings? Are His blessings to make us rich? What are some reasons God would bless us?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for the many ways You bless us. Help us remember that current blessings aren’t necessarily for our current pleasure but Your way of preparing for the future or helping us bless those in need around us. Give us wisdom to know which way You want us to use the blessing. In Jesus’ name, amen.
