Psalm 121

Verse 2 My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

Now that we have a better understanding of how to get our focus adjusted for worship, we follow the psalmist into reasons he worships God.

The psalmist starts out this song of ascent with a question about where his help comes from. This is a question that all of us have asked at one time or another. Sure the words were probably different, something more like, “How am I going to make it?” Or maybe, “Why, God?” However we word it, the question is the same, “God, how can I…?” We don’t know what to do and we don’t know how to manage.

The psalmist knows the only One that can help us is the One who made us and knows us better than we know ourselves. By declaring that his help came from the Lord, the psalmist was saying that he knew he couldn’t help himself. He knew that human power is limited and that no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t fix the problems that come along.

Since the Lord made the earth and all that is in it, He already knows all that can go wrong. In fact He knows the exact issues that will come up in our lives and has a solution already at the ready. But we need to notice and remember what the psalmist was pointing out, we need to ask for His help.

Yes, God desires to help His children but like a parent that is trying to help their child mature, He doesn’t just take over and do everything for us. He knows the help we need even better than we do. We don’t even know what to ask sometimes but that doesn’t mean that we should stay silent. He wants to hear from us. He wants us to tell Him when we are upset, nervous and scared. We don’t need to tell Him because He doesn’t know, it is that He wants to mean enough to us that we will trust Him with our heart.

The level of comfort we have with taking our concerns to God reveals the level we trust Him. If we don’t truly trust Him, we won’t be able to worship Him through our coming to Him with our concerns.

Making It Personal

How comfortable are you in coming to God with your concerns? Is it hard for you to trust Him when you don’t know the outcome? What do you need to bring to Him today?

Making It Personal Kids

Why should you tell Jesus your troubles? Does He listen to your troubles? What is something you need to share with Him today?

Closing Prayer

Father, we confess that we too often fail to trust You with the concerns of our hearts. Thank You for being the One that we can trust no matter what. Help us learn to bring everything to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
